Yesterday I said goodbye to my grandma for the last time. Two weeks ago I sent
her a birthday card with every intention of sending another next year. In the
short span of time between that card and today, my grandmother went from
seemingly healthy, to hospitalized as a result of a fall, to a diagnosis of acute
leukemia and a life expectancy of a couple weeks or less. The expected aggression of the disease combined with the hundreds of miles that separate us means that when I hugged her goodbye on Easter, it was for the final time. I am thankful for the chance to say goodbye, for the one last hug, that our family was able to gather together and spend one final holiday with her. In the end, what more can you ask for when losing a loved one?
